When it's right

Gel and Shellac need infilling or replacing every two to three weeks. Builder gel typically holds three to four weeks. Pedicures last considerably longer, often four to six weeks, because toenails grow more slowly and are protected by shoes.

Why professional matters

Longevity in nails is almost entirely down to preparation and application, not the brand of gel. Correct cuticle work, correct dehydration of the nail plate, thin even layers and a properly capped free edge are what stop lifting at day five. Safe removal matters just as much: scraped, over-filed nails are why so many people think gel ruins their nails.

Gel that lifts within a week is not bad luck, it is rushed prep. Once water gets underneath a lifted edge you have a hygiene problem as well as a cosmetic one.

Aggressive electric filing and picked-off gel take layers of the natural nail with them, which is exactly why nails end up thin, bendy and permanently sore.

Gel versus Shellac versus builder gel

Shellac is a specific brand of soak-off gel polish. It is thin, glossy and easy to remove, and it is ideal for natural nails in reasonable condition. Gel polish more broadly covers the same category of soak-off colour. Builder gel is thicker and structural: it is applied as an overlay over the natural nail, cured in layers and shaped, so it adds genuine strength and can extend the nail slightly beyond the fingertip. If your nails are strong and you want colour, choose gel or Shellac. If your nails bend, split or break before they grow, choose builder gel.

Why retention fails

Gel lifts for four common reasons: oil or moisture left on the nail plate at application, cuticle skin not properly pushed back so product sits on skin rather than nail, layers applied too thickly to cure fully, and an uncapped free edge. All four are preparation and application faults, not client faults. Aftercare matters too: cuticle oil daily keeps the surrounding skin flexible, and gloves for cleaning and gardening prevent chemical and physical damage.

Nail health and safe removal

The natural nail is layered keratin, and every one of those layers matters. Picking gel off takes the top layers with it, which is why nails feel thin and tender afterwards. We soak off with the correct solvent and gentle timing rather than scraping, and we assess the natural nail at every appointment. If we can see damage, thinning or any sign of infection, we will say so and recommend a break or a treatment plan rather than simply applying more product over the top.

Pedicures and foot care

A pedicure is more than colour. Nails are cut and shaped correctly to reduce the risk of ingrown toenails, cuticles are tidied, hard skin is reduced on the heels and balls of the feet, and the foot is massaged. Because toenails grow at roughly half the rate of fingernails and spend most of their life in shoes, gel pedicures routinely last four to six weeks, which makes them extremely good value per week worn.

Booking around events

For a wedding, book your trial at least four weeks out and your final appointment two to four days before, not the day before, so there is time to fix anything you decide you do not like. For holidays, a gel pedicure the week before travel will comfortably see you through a fortnight of pools and sand.
